Who Wrote Angels from the Realms of Glory Lyrics?
The lyrics for “Angels from the Realms of Glory” were written by the Scottish poet and hymnist James Montgomery.
James Montgomery was born on November 4, 1771, in Irvine, southwest Scotland.
His parents were pastors and missionaries of the Moravian Brethren, and he was sent to the Moravian School at Fulneck, near Leeds, for ministry training while his parents went to the West Indies.
Sadly, both of his parents passed away within a year of each other.
Despite facing this difficult situation, James pursued secular studies at Fulneck and showed a strong interest in poetry.
However, he didn’t finish his schooling and took on various jobs, including working as an apprentice to a baker in Mirfield and a storekeeper at Wath-upon-Dearne.
After an unsuccessful attempt at a literary career in London, James moved back to Sheffield in 1792.
There, he worked as an assistant auctioneer, bookseller, and printer for the Sheffield Register. Later, he started the Sheffield Iris, a newspaper outlet.
James faced political prosecution and was jailed twice. Making the best of his time in jail, he published a pamphlet of poems called “Prison Amusements” in 1797.
In 1840, he wrote a prose account of his experiences during that period.
He gained some fame with “The Wanderer of Switzerland” (1806), a poem written in six parts with seven-syllable cross-rhymed quatrains.
