Joseph Henry Gilmore was an American Baptist minister, scholar, and hymnwriter. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 29, 1834.
Gilmore received his early education at Phillips Academy in Andover and Brown University. He later attended Newton Theological Seminary.
Gilmore’s primary occupation was in the ministry. He was ordained in 1862 and held a Baptist ministerial charge at Fisherville, New Hampshire, from 1862 to 1864.
Thereafter, he pastored Second Baptist Church in Rochester, New York, from 1865 to 1867. He was known for his eloquence in preaching and his deep theological understanding.
However, for the years 1867–68, he also served as acting professor of Hebrew at the Rochester Theological Seminary.
In 1868, he was appointed professor of rhetoric, logic, and English at the University of Rochester, a position he held until his retirement in 1908.
Professor Gilmore was the author of many books on English. Some of his books include ‘The Art of Expression’ (1876), ‘Familiar Chats on Books and Reading’, and ‘Outlines of English and American Literature’ (1905).
In addition to his pastoral duties and scholarly pursuits, Gilmore also made significant contributions to Christian hymnody.
He was the author of the world-famous hymn ‘He Leadeth Me’, as well as other religious poems.
