The Author Of The Amazing Grace Hymn Lyrics
The words of this salvation hymn, “Amazing Grace,” were written by John Newton.
The Anglican priest wrote the words of the hymn “Amazing Grace” based on his life experiences. The hymn later became popular and is sung all over the world, especially in the United States of America.
John Newton was once a captain of slave ships and a slave trader before he became an Anglican clergyman.
He was born on the 24th of July 1725 in London and was under the devoted care of his mother until the age of seven. However, she passed away when young John Newton was just seven years old.
Afterward, John started school when he was eight years old and later joined his father on a voyage at the age of eleven.
As a young boy, John lacked any specific religious conviction and led a profligate youth. He was captured and impressed into the British Royal Navy, becoming a midshipman in the British Navy services.
John Newton was later held hostage as a slave in Sierra Leone before he became a slave trader for several years in the Africa region.

John Newton continued his nonbeliever life but was later converted in a storm at sea while returning from Africa in 1748.
Subsequently, he married Mary Catlett, who was his childhood love, on February 12th, 1750.
Later, in 1755, he quit the slave trade and pursued Christian theology.
Thereafter, he started ministry work in the Church of England at one Established Church in 1758. However, he was not ordained until 1764 when he fulfilled the curacy of Olney, near Cambridge.
John Newton continued his life as a minister of God, doing faithful and outstanding work for several years as rector of St. Mary Woolnoth.
He attained an honored old age but was troubled by ill health and failing eyesight. On December 21st, 1807, John Newton bid farewell to this world and was laid to rest in London.
Afterward, in 1893, John Newton and his noble wife were re-interred in Olney at the Church of St Peter and Paul.
