Who Wrote I Need Thee Every Hour Lyrics

The lyrics of I Need Thee Every Hour was written by American poet and gospel hymnist Annie Sherwood Hawks in 1872. The touch of Robert Lowry who was her pastor gave birth to the music and refrain of the lyrics.

Robert Lowry added the chorus to the lyrics of the hymn. This he does during the time he wrote the music that the lyrics are popularly known with.

At the time of her death, it was said that “I Need Thee Every Hour” has been translated into several languages besides English than any other modern hymn.

Annie Sherwood Hawks life

Annie Sherwood Hawks was born in Hoosick, New York City, America on the 28th of May 1836 by English and Dutch parents. In particular, her father was English while her mother was Dutch from Holland.

She did not graduate from any school but her passion for reading was remarkable. Of course, she loves books and reading which made her read extensively.

As a result of her reading and self-studies, she started submitting poems to a local newspaper at the tender age of 14.



Later Life

She married Charles Hial Hawks and later moved with him to Brooklyn in January of 1865. Both Annie and her husband were members of Hanson Place Baptist Church.

Reverend (Dr.) Robert Lowry was the pastor in charge of the church during that period and that was how she met him.  

He later became her friend as well as her pastor. Reverend (Dr.) Robert Lowry was also a hymn-writer with more than 500 hymn lyrics and tunes.

Annie Sherwood Hawks was encouraged by Revered Lowry to compose hymns she can call her own. Since then she started writing hymns and she wrote a lot of them.

The death separated her husband from her in 1888. Afterward, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law in Bennington, Vermont. She lived with them until her last breath.

Annie Sherwood Hawks bid this world goodbye on the 3rd of January 1918 at Bennington, Vermont. She laid to rest at Hoosick Rural Cemetery in Hoosick, New York.

During her life, Annie Sherwood Hawks used her gift to write about 400 hymns. Most of these hymns were used in Sunday schools.  Be that as it may, “I Need Thee Every Hour” is most widely known among all of her hymns.

Apart from written hymns, Annie Sherwood Hawks wrote substantial numbers of poems as well. Nevertheless, she was majorly known for her hymn.
