Who Wrote I Need Thee Every Hour Lyrics

American poet and gospel hymnist Annie Sherwood Hawks wrote the lyrics of “I Need Thee Every Hour” in 1872. Her pastor, Robert Lowry, contributed to the music and refrain of the lyrics.

Robert Lowry added the chorus to the hymn during the time he composed the music, which is now popularly known.

At the time of her death, it was said that “I Need Thee Every Hour” had been translated into more languages besides English than any other modern hymn.

Annie Sherwood Hawks life

Annie Sherwood Hawks was born in Hoosick, New York City, America, on the 28th of May 1836, to English and Dutch parents. Her father was English, while her mother was Dutch from Holland.

Though she did not graduate from any school, her passion for reading was remarkable. She loved books and reading, which led her to read extensively.

As a result of her reading and self-studies, she started submitting poems to a local newspaper at the tender age of 14.

Later Life

Annie Sherwood Hawks married Charles Hial Hawks and they moved to Brooklyn in January of 1865. Both Annie and her husband were members of Hanson Place Baptist Church.

During that period, Reverend (Dr.) Robert Lowry was the pastor in charge of the church, and that was how she met him.

He later became her friend as well as her pastor. Reverend (Dr.) Robert Lowry was also a hymn-writer with more than 500 hymn lyrics and tunes.

Reverend Lowry encouraged Annie Sherwood Hawks to compose hymns she could call her own. Since then, she started writing hymns, and she wrote a lot of them.

In 1888, her husband’s death separated him from her. Afterward, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law in Bennington, Vermont. She lived with them until her last breath.

Annie Sherwood Hawks bid this world goodbye on the 3rd of January 1918 at Bennington, Vermont. She was laid to rest at Hoosick Rural Cemetery in Hoosick, New York.

During her life, Annie Sherwood Hawks used her gift to write about 400 hymns. Most of these hymns were used in Sunday schools. “I Need Thee Every Hour” is most widely known among all of her hymns.

Apart from writing hymns, Annie Sherwood Hawks wrote a substantial number of poems as well. Nevertheless, she was majorly known for her hymns.
