Just As I Am Hymn Lyrics

1. Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

2. Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

3. Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt;
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

4. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind;
Yes, all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

5. Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

6. Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871)

Charlotte Elliott, an English hymn writer, editor, and poet, wrote this popular hymn “Just As I Am” and many others.

She was born on the 18th of March 1789, at Westfield Lodge, Brighton. Charlotte Elliott was the third of the six children of Charles Elliott, a silk merchant of Clapham and Brighton.

Her mother, Eling, was the daughter of Reverend Henry Venn, a minister at Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, who wrote The Complete Duty of Man in 1763.

Charlotte grew up in a comfortable home in Clapham, which is now part of London, and spent the first thirty-two years of her life there.

She was light-hearted, lively, and creative, living a carefree life and enjoying it to the fullest. Charlotte received a high-quality education and developed a great passion for art and music at an early age in her life. She spent most of her days drawing portraits and writing humorous verses.

However, in 1821, at the age of 32, she started suffering from a serious illness that later left her invalid. Despite all efforts that had been made, she remained in that condition for the rest of her life.

She spent over a decade there and then returned to Brighton in 1857.

As a result of her illness, she was bedridden until she was called to glory on the 22nd of September 1871 in Brighton.
